Veteran Exemption
Are you a 100% disabled veteran or surviving spouse of a 100% disabled veteran?
An exemption from property tax on homesteads is available for 100% disabled veterans and surviving spouses of a 100% disabled veteran. The exemption would apply to certain injured veterans and their surviving spouses. The exemption would be for the full fair cash value of the homestead real and household personal property. To qualify for the exemption, the veteran would have to meet several requirements.
The veteran must have been honorably discharged from a branch of the Armed Forces or the Oklahoma National Guard.
The veteran would have to be a state resident.
The veteran would have to have a 100% permanent disability.
The disability would have to have been sustained through military action or accident or result from a disease contracted while in active service.
The disability would have to be certified by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. To obtain this letter, please contact the Muskogee office at (918) 781-7766. It must have the embossed seal.
The veteran would have to be otherwise qualified for homestead exemption. The exemption can be claimed beginning January 1, 2006. Exemptions must be applied for in the same year it is requested.
Ask your county Assessor for details.
How to File for the 100% Disabled Veteran Exemption
Get an application form your local county Assessor’s office.
Fill out only one application. There is a separate application for the surviving spouse.
Return the form to your local Assessor's office.
Provide necessary information:
The embossed letter, obtained from the Muskogee office, stating the 100% disability status.
If your home is a manufactured home, you must have a copy of the title to the home, or a verified copy of the purchase contract.
If the Assessor denies or modifies your exemption, he or she must tell you in writing within five days. This notice must explain how you can protest before the CBOE.
Once you receive the 100% disabled veteran's exemption, you do not have to apply again, unless your qualifications change. If you move to a new home, you will have to fill out a new application to the new address, and provide a new embossed letter, obtained from the Muskogee office, stating the 100% disability status showing the new address.
The Assessor may require a new application by sending you a written notice and an application form. If you do not return the new application, you can lose your exemptions
